The second is to make artillery either buildable or towable and force it a grid or two further away from HQ. The best change the game can make to artillery is to first, stop letting everyone get an exact range just by pinging the map, force them to use a squad lead. Each mortar held a dozen rounds, a squad would have two (used to be three), and you NEEDED a dedicated squad member or two or even another squad to run logistics to keep the ammo flowing, it was very hectic. Another important aspect was limited ammunition. And you couldn't build close to the main spawn, it had to be in the field. Dispersion I believe was 50m for the 120mm mortars, insurgent factions had much larger dispersion. I remember this one map, Vadso, had many hills of different heights and what I did was I loaded the map into an editor, grabbed the heightmap data, and actually made a colored 2d map overlay that I printed out to help with elevations. PR also took into account terrain height, a 10m difference in height between mortar and target didn't matter much, but it really came into play on maps with lots of hills. Unlike in HLL however, the mortars had to be built each time, so cloud spotting was much harder, but it could be done and elevation could be pre calculated. Your actual distance could be 1377m, but the SL would see either 1350m or 1400m. The distance was also based on the keypad grid, not exact, and it would round the numbers. But only the squad leader could see the range to the target. Your mortars would, like in HLL, be adjusted for elevation in mils and also deflection. Later on you had Project Reality, basically the predecessor to both HLL and Squad. Like in HLL, the artillery pieces themselves were usually fixed. Back then what you did was called cloud spotting, you would spend some time with a couple buddies or yourself in advance, fire some shells, see where they land, and then take a screenshot from the gunners point of view. I only have two weeks in this game so take this with a grain of salt, but this has been a thing for 20 years.Īs early as BATTLEFIELD 1942 I was an artillerist in some competitive tournaments, and I remember getting roughly 400 kills in a match (Battlefield 1918 mod, and we still lost).
